Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) for Trauma Recovery

At Hello Baby! Midwifery, we understand the profound impact that trauma can have on your life. Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) is a powerful therapeutic approach that can help you reframe and heal from traumatic experiences, especially those related to pregnancy, birth, and early parenting. Led by experienced midwife Ros McDonough, our NLP sessions provide compassionate, effective support in the comfort of your own home.

What is Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP)?

Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) is a psychological approach that involves understanding and modifying the connection between neurological processes, language, and behavioural patterns. NLP aims to help individuals reprogram their brain’s responses to trauma, enabling them to process and heal from distressing memories effectively.

How NLP Helps with Trauma

NLP techniques are particularly effective for addressing trauma related to pregnancy and birth. By using specific NLP methods, Ros helps you refile traumatic memories and reduce their emotional impact. This approach allows you to move forward with greater emotional resilience and well-being. Memories are ‘refiled’, deeper within the brain, so they are less able to provoke a flight or fight response. The memories remain, but they no longer hold the same intensity of distress.

The trauma can be related to trying to conceive, pregnancy loss, hyperemesis, pregnancy, birth, feeding, neonatal ill health. For those who have experienced trauma related to your journey to parenthood, we offer the 3-Step Rewind Program, which incorporates NLP techniques. Learn more about the 3-Step Rewind Program.

NLP with Ros McDonough

  1. Initial Consultation: During the first session, you will have the opportunity to talk about your experience without worrying about what your partner, family or friends might say or think. Ros will listen without judgement and hold space for you with empathy and kindness. We discuss your needs and goals to tailor the NLP techniques to your specific situation. In some cases, this style of debriefing or story listening is effective in relieving the emotional burden in and of itself. It is also useful to note that talking about your experience is not necessary for the following two sessions to be effective.

  2. NLP Techniques Application: In subsequent sessions, Ros will apply various NLP techniques to help you reframe and heal from traumatic memories. These techniques are designed to be non-intrusive and effective. NLP works with the natural physiology of memories, through guided meditation and visualisation, to refile challenging memories deeper within the brain. Memory of the event remains but it doesn’t provoke the same intensity of distress.

  3. Follow-Up Sessions: Ros will work with you to monitor progress and adjust techniques as needed. Generally only 3 appointments are required. A third appointment allows for support and follow-up, and to repeat the NLP rewind technique if needed.

Benefits of NLP Therapy

  • Non-Intrusive: NLP does not require you to analyse or dissect traumatic experiences in detail. However, you may find relief and benefit in having space held for you while you are respectfully listened to and heard.

  • Effective Healing: Helps refile traumatic memories and reduce their emotional impact.

  • Home-Based Sessions: Conducted in the comfort of your home or via telehealth, ensuring a safe and relaxed environment.

  • Overall Well-Being: Supports mental health and emotional resilience.

NLP is beneficial for individuals who have experienced loss, or pregnancy, birth or early parenting challenges. It is also effective for partners dealing with secondary trauma and anyone seeking non-intrusive trauma relief.
